Rain Returns Late Tomorrow Night

COLD DECEMBER DAY: Despite a sunny sky, temperatures are only in the 40s over most of North/Central Alabama this afternoon. The range was from 41 at Cullman to 50 at Tuscaloosa as I write this at mid-afternoon. Another clear, cold night is ahead with lows down in the 20s early tomorrow.
RAIN RETURNS AS THE WEEKEND BEGINS: Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the low to mid 50s, but clouds will thicken late in the day. A short wave will bring rain to the state late tomorrow night into part of the day Saturday; based on the 12Z model set it now looks like the main window for rain around here will come from about midnight tomorrow night through 12:00 noon Saturday. The rain will linger into the afternoon for areas south and east of Birmingham, but all of the rain should be out of the state by late Saturday afternoon.
Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely, and while there could be a touch of thunder in spots, we won’t have any severe weather issues with little if any surface based instability.
COLDER SUNDAY: Sunday will be a rather cold and blustery day with a high only in the mid 40s with a stuff north wind of 10-20 mph. Some clouds could linger, but the sky should become partly to mostly sunny. Sunday night will be cold; we drop well down into the 20s by daybreak Monday.
NEXT WEEK: The week looks dry and quiet; highs mostly in the 50s, lows in the 30s Tuesday through Friday morning. Don’t see any significant chance of rain for now.
CHRISTMAS WEEK: The 12Z model set supports the same idea; a chance of rain the weekend before Christmas (December 21-22), followed by a cold airmass. The last few runs have kept the core of the seriously cold air north of Alabama, but we won’t really know about the intensity of the cold until next week (we need to be within 7 days to really be specific). But, for now the weather looks cold and dry here for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
