TEMPS STAY BELOW AVERAGE: The average high today in Birmingham is 57 degrees, but we probably won’t get past the mid 40s this afternoon despite a sunny sky thanks to a new surge of colder air dropping into the state this morning. And, tomorrow morning we go back down in the 20s with a clear sky.
Tomorrow will feature a partly sunny sky and a high back in the 50-55 degree range, but clouds will thicken late in the day ahead of the next storm system to impact our state.
RAIN TO START THE WEEKEND: Rain should enter the far western counties of Alabama between 10:00 p.m. and midnight tomorrow night, and the rain will move steadily southeast overnight. The high resolution (4km) NAM has the rain reaching the Birmingham metro area around 3:00 a.m.
Rain should be widespread across Alabama Saturday morning, but it will end from northwest to southeast during the midday hours. If you are in places like Haleyville, Hamilton, Fayette, and Vernon, Saturday afternoon should be generally dry, but the rain will linger into the afternoon for areas south and east of Birmingham. The broad 12 hour window for the rain will come from 2:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely, and while there could be a little thunder in spots, we won’t have to worry about severe weather with little if any surface based instability. The high Saturday afternoon will be in the upper 50s.
COLDER SUNDAY: Yet another surge of colder air will move into our state Saturday night, and Sunday will be a day with a clearing sky and a high in the mid 40s along with a chilly north breeze. We head back down into the 20s early Monday morning.
NEXT WEEK: The week generally speaking looks quiet, with highs mostly in the 50s and lows in the 30s along with a good supply of sunshine each day.
CHRISTMAS WEEK: We are still seeing pretty good evidence from medium range computer model guidance another blast of very cold Arctic air could invade the continental U.S. the week of December 23-27. Looks like we will have some rain the weekend of December 21-22 before the cold air gets here… still way too early to know if the coldest air will impact Alabama, but looks like it will be hard to avoid it.
