Windy And Cold; Clearing Later Today

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RAIN GONE FOR A WHILE: The rain moved out of here very early this morning, and the wet weather is now confined to areas south and east of I-85 as I write this. Temperatures have dropped below freezing over parts of North Alabama, but the rain ended before that happened, and I am not aware of any bridge icing issues. The NWS in Huntsville cancelled the “winter weather advisory” for their counties around 3:30 this morning.

THE DAY AHEAD: Our weather will be windy and cold; we won’t get past the mid 40s with a north wind of 10-20 mph. The clearing process should begin this afternoon as drier air enters the state. Tonight will be cold with a clear sky and diminishing wind… we drop into the mid 20s early tomorrow.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The sun will be out in full force tomorrow and Thursday (good luck finding your sunglasses). We reach the low 50s tomorrow, but colder air drops back in here Thursday with a high back in the 40s. The 00Z NAM is printing a high of only 43 degrees for Birmingham Thursday.

The weather stays dry Friday, although clouds will move in late in the day.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A rather robust but fast moving weather system will bring rain back to the state as the weekend begins. Latest model data suggests the main window for rain will come from about 3:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday. There might be a touch of thunder in spots, but very little surface based instability means no severe weather issues, and rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely.

Sunday will be dry, but breezy and colder with a partly to mostly sunny sky. The high Sunday afternoon will be in the mid 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be rain-free for the first half of next week with highs around 50, and lows in the 20s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

CHRISTMAS WEATHER? Long time readers understand there is no skill in a specific forecast beyond 7 days, but the medium range models now carry us out to Christmas Day. Very poor consistency in the 10-15 day period; some GFS runs have suggested a major Arctic blast just before Christmas, but the 06Z GFS hints the cold air won’t arrive until after Christmas. We just don’t know yet… stay tuned.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode we produced last night.

I have a weather program this morning at Elvin Hill Elementary in Columbiana, and tonight I will read “Twas The Night Before Christmas” at Bottletree in Birmingham to help raise money for the Christian Service Mission. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 4:00 or so this afternoon… enjoy the day!
