Calm Weather Nationwide
Across much of the U.S. this weekend, we have a mostly zonal flow in place. That means there are no big ridges or troughs showing up on the weather maps. As we look at the upper-levels of the atmosphere, we see this zonal flow blowing generally from west to east across the country. This zonal flow is present in most of the levels of the atmosphere. We do see a trough beginning to develop off the West Coast and that will bring a change in the weather during the week ahead.
Zonal flow, a lot of times gives a fairly calm weather pattern for the U.S. As we look at the watch and warning map, this calm weather pattern is present. Rarely do we see so few issued advisories as there are east of the Rockies currently. There are a few winter weather advisories for portions of Montana and Idaho, with a few flood warnings around the Seattle area. There is a storm system moving into the Pacific Northwest that will be causing quite a mess with the weather up there. This zonal pattern will be changing heading into the new work week as a trough will be diving into the western U.S. and will allow for a new storm system to develop over the next few days.
