Dry Just a Little Longer
A gorgeous but chilly day in Central Alabama. The sky has been streaked at times with some high cirrus clouds, but the sunshine has been nice. Unfortunately, the sunshine has not done much for the cold advection occurring so that the brisk north wind has made it feel a bit cooler than the lower and middle 40s recorded by various thermometers. And a quick peek at the regional radar shows that precipitation has already begun to break out in Texas with a gradual motion our way.
We still expect to see a surface low develop in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico Monday and move eastward along the Gulf Coast. At the same time, we’re watching an upper low that is kicking out of the Four Corners area and will be moving across the Southeast US during the next several days. Rain is likely to spread into Alabama from the west during the afternoon Monday. Precipitation might begin with some light sleet since the air is relatively dry from the surface up several thousand feet. As rain falls into that dry air and cools it, we could see some ice pellets/sleet with the onset of precipitation Monday afternoon. No travel issues are expected.
Tuesday will be a wet, raw day with temperatures struggling to reach 50 degrees. Two to 3 inches of rain is possible as we undergo a good soaking rain. The precipitation should come to an end on Wednesday, but it is still possible that we may see the precipitation change over the light snow or snow flurries as it is ending. Again, no real travel issues are anticipated.
With rain and snow moving up the eastern seaboard of the US on Wednesday and early Thursday, there is potential for there to be travel issues both for ground and air transportation. Low ceilings and visibilities could bunch up air traffic, and we all know that there are more wrecks in wet weather. If you have travel plans for Thanksgiving, please keep the weather in mind and don’t try to push it!
