Showers Return Tomorrow; Much Colder By The Weekend
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
THIS AFTERNOON: The sky is generally cloudy across Alabama this afternoon, although some spots are seeing some breaks in the overcast. Temperatures are mostly in the 60s, although some spots near the Georgia border are still in the 50s (Auburn reports 57 degrees at 2:00). Nothing on radar here, but we note showers on radar over parts of Arkansas and extreme West Tennessee.
Not much change tonight; the sky will remain mostly cloudy, but rain stays northwest of Alabama.
TOMORROW: The day looks mostly cloudy and mild; some places will reach 70 degrees. We will forecast a chance of showers during the day, especially north of I-59, where places like Muscle Shoals will deal with periods of rain through the day. The band of showers will sink southward slowly tomorrow night ahead of a strong cold front.
COLD AIR BLAST FOR THE WEEKEND: The latest run of the high resolution NAM is a tad slower with the cold air Saturday; it suggests that temperatures won’t begin to drop until after 3:00; prior to that we will reach the mid 50s. But, winds will pick up out of the north during the afternoon, averaging 12-25 mph ushering in much colder air with falling temperatures late in the day. We will also maintain the risk of scattered showers, and areas of light rain on Saturday, but the rain won’t be really widespread or too heavy.
Sunday will be sunny, but windy and cold. We start the day down in the mid 20s, and the high will be in the mid 40s. Monday morning will also feature a low in the mid 20s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB has a game tonight at Legion Field against the Rice Owls, the game kicks off at 6:30 CT. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but we don’t expect any significant rain. Temperatures will be comfortable with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the mid 50s during the second half.
Showers are a possibility for tomorrow night’s high school football playoff games with a cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50s. Higher chance of rain for the games will be north of Birmingham, especially north of U.S. 278.
Saturday, Alabama hosts UT-Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium (1:00p CT kickoff); the afternoon will be cloudy and windy with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff into the 40s during the fourth quarter. North winds will average 15-25 mph, and there could be some light rain during the game.
THANKSGIVING WEEK: Clouds increase Monday, and some rain could begin around here Monday night ahead of a surface low in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Tuesday still looks like a very wet day for Alabama as the low passes just the the south. Rain is likely most of the day with a gusty east wind. No severe weather, and probably no thunder, but rain amounts of at least one inch are likely, with heavier totals possible over South Alabama. I doubt if we get out of the 40s Tuesday.
On Wednesday, a new surface low will organized just off the North Carolina coast, and around here it looks like clouds will linger through most of the day with a chance of some light rain at times. Wednesday’s high will be close to 50 degrees.
Then, the weather looks mostly sunny on Thanksgiving Day with a low in the 28-32 degree range, followed by a high in the 60s.
We stay dry on “Black Friday” and “Iron Bowl Saturday” with a slow warming trend; I still think the temperature could reach the low 60s during the Alabama/Auburn game on November 30. See the Weather Xtreme video for a daily look at all of the maps and graphics.
