Arctic Blast For The Weekend
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
THIS MORNING: The sky is mostly cloudy across Alabama this morning, with temperatures generally in the 50-55 degree range. A touch of drizzle is possible in a few spots over East Alabama this morning, otherwise the day will be generally dry statewide; best chance of seeing some sun today will come over the western counties. Highs will vary from the mid to upper 50s near the Georgia border, to the mid 60s over West Alabama.
TOMORROW: The day will be mostly cloudy mild with a high not too far from 70 degrees; almost ten degrees above average for late November in Alabama. The high resolution NAM is now showing potential for a few showers as far south as I-20 during the early morning hours, so we will introduce the risk of showers during the day. Don’t think the rain will be really heavy or widespread, but if you have plans outdoors keep that in mind. Showers will remain possible tomorrow night.
COLD AIR BLAST ON SATURDAY: We will be in the 50s Saturday morning, but temperatures will drop into the 40s during the afternoon with strong north winds of 15-25 mph developing. The day will be cloudy, and a few showers are possible. It will be a raw, cold, and damp day.
The sky will clear Saturday night, and we should be down in the mid 20s early Sunday morning. Sunday will be sunny, but still windy and cold with a high in the mid 40s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB has a game tonight at Legion Field against the Rice Owls, the game kicks off at 6:30 CT. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but we don’t expect any significant rain. Temperatures will be comfortable with a kickoff temperature near 58 degrees, falling into the mid 50s during the second half.
Showers are a possibility for tomorrow night’s high school football playoff games with a cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50s. Higher chance of rain for the games will be north of Birmingham, especially north of U.S. 278.
Saturday, Alabama hosts UT-Chattanooga at Bryant-Denny Stadium (1:00p CT kickoff); the afternoon will be cloudy, cold, and windy with temperatures falling from the low 50s at kickoff into the 40s during the second half. North winds will average 15-25 mph, and the latest data suggests we might see a little light rain during the game, but nothing heavy or especially widespread.
THANKSGIVING WEEK: More fast paced weather changes. Monday will begin with a freeze and lows in the mid 20s. Clouds move in quickly during the day Monday, and rain could break out Monday night. Tuesday looks really wet with a surface low just south of Mobile; a soaking rain is likely with a steady east wind of 10-20 mph. About one inch of rain is likely here, with heavier amounts over South Alabama. We won’t get out of the 40s as the rain falls Tuesday.
Wednesday, the GFS hints that lingering light rain is possible over North Alabama as the storm moves over to the Atlantic coast; again it looks like we hold in the 40s all day with clouds and some light rain at times.
Then, the sun comes out for Thanksgiving Day with a high in the 50s. The weather stays dry for “Black Friday” and “Iron Bowl Saturday”. At this very early stage of the game, for the Alabama/Auburn game at Jordan-Hare Stadium on November 30 it looks like a partly sunny day with a high in the 60s. This, of course, could change, but there has been very good model consistency in this idea.
