Severe Weather Threat Sunday Night
The latest day 2 convective outlook from the SPC, which will be in effect at 6 AM tomorrow morning and will last the entire day, has areas from the Southeast into the Great Lakes under a risk for severe weather. The standard slight risk includes much of north-central Alabama including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston and areas to the north.
The SPC is predicting a fairly substantial severe weather outbreak across the Ohio Valley on Sunday. They have much of the region outlined in a moderate risk for severe weather. All modes of severe weather are expected as a dynamic system will be moving out of the Plains and into the Midwest and Great Lakes. Large hail and tornadoes are expected, but the main threat with this system will be a threat of damaging straight line winds; winds of 80 mph will be possible.
For Alabama, most of Sunday should be a descent day. It will be a very mild day, with afternoon highs in the mid 70s. There could be a few showers throughout the day, but the main timing for strong and possibly severe storms will be late in the day and into the overnight hours. The better dynamics for severe weather will be across the Ohio Valley, but at the storm system swings a front across the state storms could likely cause a damaging wind event for us. For the Birmingham area, the main window for these storms will be closer to midnight. We will be watching this system as it begins to intensify and we will be updating the blog tomorrow once we have a better understanding on the timing and scope of the severe weather threat.
