Some Rain This Morning; Colder Tomorrow
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
RADAR CHECK: Clouds cover most of Alabama at daybreak, and a few sprinkles/areas of light rain are on radar over Central Alabama as an upper trough approaches, so some of you will see a few raindrops on the windshield driving in to work. The rain won’t amount to much, and most places won’t get enough to measure.
The sky should begin to clear later today as a new surge of colder air moves into the state; the high today should be in the low 70s.
TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: Sunny cool days, clear cold nights. The low early Thursday and Friday will be in the 34-39 degree range with frost likely for colder spots and protected areas. We will have a hard time getting out of the 50s tomorrow despite maximum available sunshine; we rise into the upper 60s Thursday, but another cold air surge will bring highs down into the mid to upper 50s Friday.
FIRST FREEZE? Sure looks like many North/Central Alabama communities will have their first freeze of the season Saturday morning. The GFS is printing a low of 33 degrees for Birmingham, and it has had a warm bias lately. We figure most places will experience a low between 27 and 34 degrees.
This is well before our average date of the first freeze (for Birmingham)… which is November 9. The earliest freeze on record came on October 18, 1948.
OUR WEEKEND: Sunny weather continues Saturday and Sunday; the high Saturday will be in the upper 50s, followed by mid 60s Sunday. We should note Sunday morning will be cold again with lows well down in the 30s and more frost.
NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS shows a vigorous storm system impacting Alabama on Halloween with rain, and even potential for strong to severe thunderstorms. Run to run consistency has not been very good, but no doubt we should see some rain toward the middle of the week; it just remains to be seen if severe weather will be a threat. But, keep in mind next week does mark the beginning of the fall severe weather season in Alabama (November and December). See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
TROPICS: Tropical Storm Lorenzo is in the middle of the Atlantic; it is moving east and is no threat to land. Over in the East Pacific, Hurricane Raymond is just off the Mexican coast, but it will head west, away from land, later today before making landfall. And, in the West Pacific, Typhoon Francisco is on a track to sideswipe the coast of Japan, but it should be weakening as that happens. See the Weather Xtreme video for all the maps.
AT THE BEACH: A little light rain is possible at times today from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, but no rain tomorrow through the weekend with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. Highs will be mostly in the 70s, with lows in the 50s. Some inland neighborhoods could reach the 40s on the Gulf Coast early Saturday morning.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. It was a very interesting show last night; Mike Morgan of KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City was our guest discussing his coverage of the 5.31 El Reno, OK tornado. Scroll down for the show notes and to listen.
