CLOUDS MOVING IN: The situation we are looking at this afternoon sure looks very much like the setup late last Friday; an upper trough is approaching, and high clouds are invading the state with a dry low level atmosphere. Computer models and human meteorologists really didn’t expect any significant rain along the I-20 corridor Saturday morning, but the upper trough did manage to squeeze “blood out of a turnip”, and many places had about 15 to 30 minutes of “illegal” rain that wasn’t forecast.

Considering that, I think we better mention some risk of a little light rain in scattered spots tonight and tomorrow morning. I don’t think it rains much, but we are seeing echoes on radar west of the state increasing this afternoon. The sky will be mostly cloudy tonight and tomorrow morning, with some sun possible tomorrow afternoon. Tonight won’t be as cold as last night; most places will be in the 48-52 degree range early tomorrow.

The sky will clear tomorrow night as a new surge of colder air blows into the state.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Wednesday will be a very cool, but sun filled day. We won’t get out of the 50s, and a cool north breeze will average 10-20 mph. Then, by early Thursday, lows will drop into the mid 30s around here with a good chance of frost for valleys and protected areas. Friday morning could be just about as cold, with mid to upper 30s.

Friday will be sunny and slightly warmer with a high in the 60s, but more cold air arrives Friday night.

FIRST FREEZE? We are projecting lows in the 27-34 degree range early Saturday, easily the coldest morning so far this season, and it will represent the first freeze of the season for many North/Central Alabama communities (just a few of the colder pockets reached 32 earlier today).

Saturday and Sunday will be sunny; the high Saturday will be near 60, with low to mid 60s Sunday. More frost is likely early Sunday with lows in the 30s again.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS shows a chance of rain thanks to an advancing cold front on Wednesday (October 30), followed by cooler and drier air on Halloween (Thursday October 31). See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and details.

LORENZO IS ON THE BOARD: Tropical Storm Lorenzo has formed in the Central Atlantic, but not to worry… it will move east and is no threat to any land area.

Over in the East Pacific, Hurricane Raymond is still at category three strength just off the Mexican coast, but it will turn west over open water and is not expected to move inland.

And, in the West Pacific, Typhoon Francisco will bring wind and rain to Tokyo later this week. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps.

GULF COAST WEATHER: A few showers are possible on the Gulf Coast tomorrow, but then we expect sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights Wednesday through the weekend; highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Mike Morgan of KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City will join us tonight; it promises to be a very interesting show. You can watch it at 8:30p on “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.
