A Few Morning Storms, Then Drier

RADAR CHECK: We had a few storms over East Alabama in the 4-5 a.m. time frame, but those have fizzled out and the radar is quiet as I write this around 5:45. We will carry a chance of scattered showers and storms through the morning hours as a surface front moves through North Alabama, but the rain probably won’t be widespread.

TO THE NORTH: Cook, Minnesota reports 36 degrees this morning, and that chilly, continental air is spreading south and east. No, we won’t see lows in the 30s here, but we will see a nice change to a drier airmass beginning tonight.

Tomorrow through Friday will be dry with sunny days, fair cooler nights, and lower humidity levels. Afternoon highs won’t change much; we will peak in the upper 80s, but the lower dewpoints will make it feel much better. Early morning lows will be well down in the 60s, and the cooler pockets have a good chance of reaching the upper 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: I guess we might consider a small risk of a shower Saturday and Sunday as moisture levels rise a tad, but most of the weekend should remain dry. Partly sunny days, fair nights, highs 86 to 89 degrees. Nice, quiet, and calm. The first part of next week looks uneventful as well. Don’t think we will have any weather issues with high school or college football this weekend.

TROPICS: This year will go down as one of the slowest starting hurricane seasons on record for the Atlantic basin… September 3 is here and we have yet to have a single hurricane. There are three waves being tracked by NHC, but they are all disorganized. The wave trying to move into the Caribbean, if by chance it develops, will turn north well before reaching the U.S. We do note the GFS ramps up a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico, with a landfall on the Texas coast, at mid-month, but this is pure voodoo now.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s episode at 8:30 CT tonight…you can watch it on our 24 hour weather channel “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.
