Storms Thin Out A Bit This Weekend

MUGGY SUMMER DAYS: August in Alabama should bring hot, humid weather, and that is the story through the weekend, although temperatures will remain slightly below average levels. Look for partly sunny days, fair nights, and some risk of a passing shower or storm during the afternoon and evening hours in a few spots. Our skill in dealing with the random convection on summer afternoons isn’t that good, so no way to tell you exactly where the afternoon showers will pop up. The chance of any one spot getting wet today, tomorrow, and Sunday is about one in four. The high each day will be pretty close to 90 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The air will be relatively dry for at least the first half of the week, so afternoon showers and storms will remain widely spaced. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny, and afternoon highs will be in the 88 to 91 degree range. The 00Z GFS hints at deeper moisture moving in here toward the end of the week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day over the weekend and into early next week, with the usual risk of scattered thunderstorms. Highs on the coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores will be in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is 82 degrees.

TROPICS: A weak disturbance is drifting westward across the northern Gulf of Mexico with no sign of organization; NHC puts a 10 percent chance of this organizing into a tropical depression over the next five days, so not much to worry about there. The deep tropics are still amazingly quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
