RADAR CHECK: Heavier storms at 3:30 this afternoon were over Walker, Winston, and Marion counties of Northwest Alabama, and just south of Huntsville. The storms are moving very little, and some communities have had heavy amounts of rain. Additional showers and storms could form at any place around here over the next few hours.
Away from the storms, the sky is partly sunny with temperatures generally in the upper 80s.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: I know we have been advertising a trend toward drier weather this weekend, but honestly confidence in that idea is fading a bit after looking at 12Z model runs. A surface front, representing the leading edge of drier air, will move into Tennessee, but southward progress into Alabama will be tough with little upper support. So… for now we will roll with a persistence forecast on these three days… mixed sun and clouds each day with the continued risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs will remain in the 87 to 90 degree range; model temperature guidance remains too hot.
NEXT WEEK: We will continue with the relatively dry forecast for much of the week thanks to a strong upper high northwest of the state. A low level northeast flow should keep temperatures from rising too much… looks like highs remain in the 87 to 90 degree range each day. Understand there is still some risk of showers and storms each day, but they will be very widely spaced.
TROPICS: Convection has increased over the Northeast Gulf of Mexico this afternoon… the guys at NHC has only a 10 percent risk of this developing into a tropical depression over the next few days; the system is expected to remain disorganized. The storms are associated with a broad surface low pressure trough.
