HEAVY DOWNPOURS: As expected, a pretty good part of North and Central Alabama has been soaked by strong summer storms today. In fact, to the north, the NWS in Huntsville has issued a flash flood watch for their counties in the Tennessee Valley. At mid-afternoon some of the heavier storms were moving into the Birmingham metro area with lots of lightning and very heavy rain. All showers and storms today are moving to the east/southeast, and the rain is keeping temperatures well below average for early August once again.
The showers and storms today are aided by an MCV (mesoscale convective vortex) generated by the big storm mass earlier this morning over Missouri.
REST OF THE WEEK: Things just won’t change much. Each day will need to mention scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms as the blanket of moist air hangs over Alabama. The rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times. But, a shower or storm is possible at just about any hour of the day or night through Friday. No real skill in trying to forecast exact start/stop times for the rain, or locations. Just be ready for occasional showers and storms. And, with PWAT values nearing 2 inches, heavy rain is likely from the stronger storms with some localized flooding issues possible.
Temperatures remain below average for August with highs mostly in the 87-90 degree range.
OUR WEEKEND: Again, not much change. Very moist air sticks around, and with an upper high west of the state we will have a northwest flow aloft, which opens the door for showers or storms at just about any hour. Highs remain mostly in the upper 80s with a mix of sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday.
And, real sign of any major synoptic change as next week begins. We are pretty much stuck in a weather rut.
TROPICS: All remains very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through mid-week.
AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sun each day through the weekend from Panama City to Gulf Shores, and of course, the risk of a few scattered storms each day. Highs around 90 on the immediate coast.
