Quick Afternoon Update
It has turned into another warm day across Central Alabama as the air has warmed nicely with readings at 2 pm around the 90 degree mark. In fact, the observation at the Birmingham airport was 90 – it might go another degree or two higher – which marks only the fourth time in July for the airport to record a high at or above 90.
Some isolated showers were showing up on radar generally along and south of a line from Aliceville to Prattville to Eufaula. Movement of the showers was slow but with a slight easterly direction.
A weak warm front was located along about that same line and was moving northward. As a result, moisture returns to the area after a couple of less humid days. A large complex of thunderstorms was located over parts of West and Middle Tennessee and western Kentucky. That cluster was moving eastward but will lay down some mesoscale boundaries for additional showers and thunderstorms later tonight and Wednesday.
Wednesday is looking pretty good for showers and thunderstorm as the humidity levels rise. A weak surface low moving along a boundary just north of Alabama should help to bring better shower chances.
The upper ridge has grown stronger today, but the overall change to a another trough over the eastern US should begin tonight and tomorrow. And a northwesterly flow aloft means we’ll need to watch for those large clusters of thunderstorm forming with traveling impulses moving out of the Central Plains into the Southeast US.
