Wow, what a week this previous one has been both in events across the country as well as the weather. We’re shaping up to have a fantastic weekend with some great Spring weather with cool mornings and warm afternoons. Gotta enjoy it while you can!

Cool-ish start to the day today with temperatures dropping into the lower and middle 30s across much of Central Alabama. With clear skies and an abundance of sun today we should see temperatures warm up into the middle 60s. We’ll see another cool morning on Sunday morning, but not quite as cold as this morning as temperatures fall back to around 40 degrees. Sunday and Monday we will probably see some passing clouds thanks to a weak upper air disturbance moving through the flow. The GFS is suggesting a bit of a wedge look to the pattern so we will need to watch for moisture coming out of the southern Atlantic as well as what kind of impact the wedge might have on temperatures. For now, I think Monday will be dry with temperatures a few degrees cooler.

Tuesday we observe a trough coming out of the Rockies which should generate a surface low that will move into the Great Lakes by midday on Tuesday. That surface low will drag a front into the Southeast US on Wednesday bringing us the next substantial rain chance. Most of the dynamics with this system appear to be well north of us, so for the moment, this does not appear to be a significant risk for severe weather. It is April, however, and the front has a fairly strong air contrast with the 540 thickness contour reaching into southern Missouri. So this will bear watching. SPC mentions this system with a note that there is some potential but not enough to include a risk area for now.

That trough swings by Thursday with a bit of a cool down with lows dropping back into the upper 40s and highs in the 70s – pretty close to what we typically see for this time of year. Friday our eye is on a fairly low latitude trough coming across West Texas. The surface low in West Texas Friday should move into the Ohio River Valley on Saturday so it will be bringing another shot at rain to Central Alabama. While the lower latitude of this system gives cause for a severe weather concern, the GFS is somewhat weak on the strength of the surface low. So we’ll need to be wary of how future model runs handle this system.

In voodoo country, the GFS is suggesting a substantial ridge for the eastern half of the country, so it does appear likely that we will see some pretty warm days for the start of May if this pattern comes to be.
