Quick Hitting Cold Shot Tomorrow

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

ROLLER COASTER RIDE: We should warm to near 60 degrees today across Alabama with a partly sunny sky; most of the day will be dry. We will mention the chance of a few light showers late this afternoon or tonight as the Arctic front passes through, but moisture is very limited.

FRIGID SATURDAY: We will have a very hard time getting out of the 30s tomorrow with an icy north wind. Forcing with a deep, cold upper trough could squeeze out a few snow flurries, but again moisture levels are very limited and no accumulation is expected.

We will drop well down into the 20s early Sunday morning, but the cold shot is a quick one. Temperatures warm nicely Sunday with a sunny sky… most places should wind up in the low 50s.

RAIN RETURNS NEXT WEEK: Clouds will increase quickly Monday, and rain and thunderstorms will return to Alabama late Monday night. Still looks like the main window for rain comes from about midnight Monday night through noon Tuesday; rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch are likely, and we don’t expect severe weather since there is no real surface based instability.

The sky will clear Tuesday night, and Wednesday looks like a great day with ample sunshine and a high near 60 degrees.

SEVERE STORMS LATE IN THE WEEK? Very interesting to note SPC has introduced a day seven severe weather risk for much of Mississippi into West Alabama; a deep vertically stacked low will be over the Great Plains, and the GFS shows a round of strong storms moving through our state Thursday night. Lots of time to keep an eye on this.

LATE MONTH: The pattern still looks very progressive and active through late February and early March with frequent weather systems to deal with; see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

STORM ALERT 2013: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama continues through February. We will share lessons learned after the April 27, 2011 generational tornado event, along with other amazing weather stories. Learn how to keep your family safe during severe weather, and have a chance to win some cool prizes as well. Here are the remaining Storm Alert tour dates…

February 21 Clanton – Jeff State Performing Arts Center
February 26 Ohatchee – Ohatchee High School
February 28 Clay – Clay/Chalkville High School

All shows begin at 6:30… be sure and get there early to get a good seat.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
