Alabama’s Weather Turning Wet

| September 28, 2012 @ 2:24 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today, but you can watch the morning edition in the video player**

THIS AFTERNOON: As expected, we have a few widely spaced showers across North and East Alabama this afternoon. See the radar below captured around 2:00 p.m.

We will maintain the risk of widely scattered showers tonight, but many communities will be dry.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: No doubt we will deal with rain at times through Monday, but details are still a bit murky. If you believe the GFS, tomorrow will feature only widely scattered showers, followed by widespread rain and thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. The NAM is a little more bullish on showers tomorrow, and drier than the GFS on Sunday.

We will simply mention the risk of showers and thunderstorms both days; I do think the rain will be more widespread on Sunday as a surface low approaches from the southwest and moisture levels deepen. We should reach the low 80s tomorrow, but we won’t get out of the 70s Sunday because of clouds and rain.

MONDAY: See the NAM output valid at 1:00 p.m. local time Monday…

A deep surface low is over SE Louisiana Monday, and if that position is correct it would mean a soaking rain for much of the state. There will be lots of Pacific moisture involved with this system (some from former Hurricane Miriam), and combined with ample Gulf moisture it could very well heavy rain at times Monday. Below is the GFS accumulated rain forecast over the next 96 hours…

Sure looks like rain amounts of over 2 inches are possible by Monday night over North Alabama. Maybe more than 3 inches in spots.

Drier air should begin to filter into the state by the middle of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Just a small risk of any one stadium getting wet tonight for the high school games across Alabama; temperatures will be in the 70s.

The UAB Blazers will host Tulsa tomorrow afternoon at Legion Field in Birmingham (2:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a passing shower or storm during the game. The kickoff temperature will be close to 81 degrees, falling into the 70s during the second half. Jacksonville State will host SE Missouri State tomorrow afternoon (3:00 p.m. kickoff)… about a one in three chance of a shower during the game with temperatures falling from near 80 at kickoff into the 70s by halftime.

Then, tomorrow night Alabama has an 8:15 p.m. date with the Ole Miss Rebels at Bryant-Denny Stadium; the sky will be cloudy, and a shower is possible during the game; I don’t expect the rain to be really widespread or heavy. Temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Today looks nice along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with a partly to mostly sunny sky and only a few scattered showers. Look for increasing shower and thunderstorm activity along the Gulf Coast over the weekend, and the rain could be heavy at times by Monday as a surface low moves along the Gulf Coast. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s.
