Showers Possible Over The Weekend
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
MOISTURE LEVELS RISING: Warm weather will continue today across Alabama; we should reach the mid 80s again this afternoon with a mix of sun and clouds. With an increase in moisture, and a weak front drifting our way from the north, we will mention some risk of widely scattered showers this afternoon and tonight. The rain won’t be widespread or heavy, but a little rain is possible in spots, especially north of Birmingham.
SHOWERY WEEKEND: With the weak front drifting down into North Alabama and becoming nearly stationary, and a good increase in moisture levels, that will mean a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms both tomorrow and Sunday. There are many outdoor events going on, and it is impossible to give you exact start and stop times for the rain in specific places, but just keep in mind a few passing showers are likely over the weekend. A little thunder is possible in spots, but we don’t expect any severe weather. Rain amounts should be generally less than one-half inch, and the sky will be generally cloudy, although the sun will peek out at times. Highs will be generally in the low 80s.
NEXT WEEK: A low pressure center will form over the Northwest Gulf Sunday, and then move east along the coast. This should bring a widespread rain event to a pretty good part of our state Monday. Still some model disagreement; the GFS hints the rain will be mainly from I-20 south, with little rain for the northern third of the state Monday, while the ECMWF suggests all of Alabama could see a good soaking with the low more to the north.
A stray shower is possible Tuesday, but the latter half of the week looks rain-free with a high around 80 degrees. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details and graphics.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few isolated showers are possible tonight, so you might consider taking along the rain gear if you are going to a high school football game. But, odds of any one stadium getting wet are only about one in five. Temperatures will be generally in the 70s with a mostly cloudy sky.
The UAB Blazers will host Tulsa tomorrow afternoon at Legion Field in Birmingham (2:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a passing shower or storm during the game. The kickoff temperature will be close to 80 degrees, falling into the 70s during the second half. Jacksonville State will host SE Missouri State tomorrow afternoon (3:00 p.m. kickoff)… about a one in three chance of a shower during the game with temperatures falling from near 80 at kickoff into the 70s by halftime.
Then, tomorrow night Alabama has an 8:15 p.m. date with the Ole Miss Rebels at Bryant-Denny Stadium; the sky will be cloudy, and a shower is possible during the game; I don’t expect the rain to be really widespread or heavy. Temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Today looks nice along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with a partly to mostly sunny sky and only a few scattered showers. Look for increasing shower and thunderstorm activity along the Gulf Coast over the weekend, and the rain could be heavy at times by Monday as a surface low moves along the Gulf Coast. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s.
TROPICS: Tropical Storm Nadine is still hanging around in the East Atlantic; it is far from land and will just loop around in the same general area for the next five days.
