Wet At Times Through Tomorrow

HAPPY LABOR DAY: We begin this holiday with rather large areas of rain across Alabama. Not seeing any lightning, but the rain is heavy in spots. The showers are moving to the east/southeast in the tropical air across Alabama.
THE DAY AHEAD: First off, the good news is that it won’t rain all day, and the sun should peak out at times. But, with a pure tropical airmass in place (precipitable water values are over 1.5 inches on most of the soundings across the Deep South), it could rain at any time today and tonight, and a heavy downpour is certainly possible.
And, we should note, the Storm Prediction Center has Central Alabama (the area between I-20 and U.S. 80) in the standard “slight risk” of severe weather for this afternoon and tonight. Much like yesterday, some of the storms later today could pack a punch with gusty winds and torrential rain. An isolated, small tornado is not totally out of the question with the remnant circulation of Isaac over western Kentucky this morning, but these are nothing like the tornadoes we experience around here in spring and fall.
We won’t get out of the 80s today due to the clouds and rain.
TOMORROW: Not much overall change tomorrow. A deep layer of moist air stays in place, and we will forecast scattered to numerous showers and storms with potential for a heavy downpour or two along the way. Like today, we don’t get out of the 80s.
WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: These three days should be drier and warmer. Partly sunny days with a few widely scattered showers or storms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. The high should be near 90 degrees.
WEEKEND FORECAST: A strong upper trough begins to form over the eastern half of the nation, and a surface cold front will push into Alabama Saturday. This should bring a good chance of showers and storms as we begin the weekend, meaning a good chance of some rain at some of the college football games in the state. A little too early to say exactly who gets wet, and when, but rain gear will certainly be in order Saturday.
But, Sunday looks delightful as a cooler and drier airmass blows into our state. It should be a rather refreshing day with a mostly sunny sky, a fresh north breeze, and low humidity. Some parts of North Alabama could very well stay in the 70s all day, giving the day a real “fall feel”.
There is a good chance we visit the cool 50s early Monday morning of next week, and Monday also looks great with a sunny sky, low humidity, and a high in the 77 to 80 degree range.
AT THE BEACH: The chance of rain at a specific point along the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores this week will run in the 30 to 50 percent range with about 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day. Highs will be in the upper 80s along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 84 degrees.
TROPICS: Tropical Storm Leslie will move very slowly northward this week between the Leeward Islands and Bermuda. NHC expects the system to become a hurricane late this week, and there is some risk that Berumda could be impacted this weekend. Then, the strong upper trough that will bring cooler and drier weather to Alabama late this weekend will pick up Leslie and take her out to sea before having a chance to impact the U.S. The rest of the tropics are fairly quiet; see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. NOTE: We will record this week’s show tomorrow night.

We are on a holiday schedule… so just one Weather Xtreme video today. We will resume the “two a day” schedule tomorrow, and stay tuned for updates on storms as today rolls along. Enjoy your Labor Day!
