Central Alabama is simply stuck in a humid weather pattern as the remnants of Isaac slowly traverse the Southeast US today through Tuesday. The result is that we will once again see showers and thunderstorms today especially across the northern half of Alabama in the vicinity and just east of the upper trough that is left from Isaac. SPC has outlooked the area of Middle Tennessee and northern Alabama for a slight risk of severe storms today where CAPE values are forecast to be around 2500 j/kg. While damaging wind is the most likely problem, low level shear may be sufficient to produce isolated weak tornadoes, too. We will also need to watch for the development of an thunderstorm clusters in the unstable air mass over Tennessee and the Tennessee River Valley.
Labor Day and Tuesday are likely to see numerous storms with some potential for damaging wind, though SPC has not specifically identified us for a slight risk area. While showers will be numerous, they will still be showers so I do not expect the rain to last all day. Because of the high amount of moisture in the atmosphere with precipitable water values still well over one and a half inches, some storms could dump significant rain amounts.
The remnants of Isaac weak and move east of us Wednesday and Thursday which gives us a break in the showers. We’ll still see showers but more scattered. A weak front approaching the area next weekend promises another increase to showers on late Friday and Saturday, but there is also a promise of some slightly drier air for Sunday with dew points forecast to drop into the lower 60s. I’ll sure take a drop in humidity levels if we can get it.
Tropics are still active with Leslie and Kirk, both tropical storms. Neither a threat to any land areas, however, Leslie may have an impact on Bermuda according to the latest NHC track.
And bad news out in voodoo country! That wonderfully cool look to a very deep trough over the eastern US we saw yesterday – well POOF!! It’s gone replaced by a more zonal flow which means no significant air mass change for us just yet! Or maybe that will change too!!

I hope your Labor Day is a good one. With lots of folks outside, be sure to heed any thunderstorms that occur and stay indoors. There have been too many lightning fatalities this year, so we want everyone to be safe – When thunder roars, stay indoors! James Spann will be back with the next Weather Xtreme Video on Monday. Not sure but he may be on a holiday schedule. Godspeed.
