MUGGY WEEKEND: While the big rains associated with Isaac were generally west of Alabama, the system did serve to pull a deep layer of tropical air northward into the state, and there is really nothing to move it out anytime soon. That will set the stage for a very humid Labor Day weekend.
In terms of the chance of rain, no doubt we will need to mention the chance of a few passing showers today, but like yesterday, the rain won’t be especially heavy or widespread. Not much sun, and the high will stay in the 80s.
For the weekend, we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow through Monday with the chance of scattered showers and storms each day. The chance of any one backyard cookout getting wet is about one in three, and the afternoon high should be close to the 90 degree mark. The 00Z model runs have actually come in with higher rain amounts for Alabama, and no doubt we might have a heavy downpour or two along the way. The NAM is printing 0.66″ for Birmingham through the weekend, while the GFS is at 0.39″.
Not much change next week; the humid air hangs over us with the risk of scattered showers and storms most of the week. The idea of drier air working into the state is mid-week for now is off the table.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight, a little light rain is possible, but nothing really heavy, and probably no thunder. The sky will be cloudy, conditions will be very humid, and temperatures will be in the 77 to 81 degree range.
Alabama and Auburn both play indoors tomorrow night making for an easy game forecast. For those flying to Dallas for the Alabama/Michigan game, Dallas will be hot and dry with a high not too far from 100 degrees tomorrow. Atlanta’s weather tomorrow will be similar to ours; very humid with some sun at times and the chance of scattered showers. The high in Atlanta tomorrow will be close to 88 degrees.
Troy will visit the UAB Blazers tomorrow… the game kicks off at 11:00 at Legion Field in Birmingham. The sun might peek out at times, and a passing shower is possible during the game. About 86 at kickoff; perhaps reaching 90 by the final whistle if the sun does make an appearance.
GULF COAST WEATHER: We project about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores over the holiday weekend, with the chance of scattered showers and storms each day. Highs will be mostly in the upper 80s. There has been a little upwelling in the wake of Isaac with slightly cooler ocean water temperatures reported; the Dauphin Island Sea Lab shows a sea surface temperature of 80 degrees early this morning.
OTHER TROPICAL NOTES: Hurricane Kirk, and Tropical Storm Leslie in the Atlantic are both expected to recurve before reaching the U.S.
