10 a.m. Update: Gulf Coast Still Being Pounded

The eye of Hurricane Issac is over eastern Terrebonne Parish and western Lafourche Parishes in South Louisiana. Houma is in the eye. SO is Chauvin. Thibodaux is getting into the eye. Here are the details from the 10 a.m. update.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER TOPS LEVEES IN PLAQUEMINES
Boat rescues are ongoing in Plaquemines Parish where the Mississippi overtopped levees and flooded the Braithwaite community in a localized disaster reminiscent of Katrina, which struck seven years ago today.

NEW ORLEANS FARING OK
High winds all night and morning have been averaging over 50 mph and gusting over 65 mph for many hours. Many signs are down. A few trees are down. There is some building damage, including peeled roofs, overturned awnings and debris. There is some flooding from rain and overwash from the lake, but the levees seem to be flooding. Some underpasses are underwater.

Shell Beach: Peaked at 11′ above normal and has dropped back to 8.3′
Waveland: Now 7.5′< which is about where it peaked. Water is still piling in there. Mobile: Now 3.9' FORECAST As Isaac moves slowly north or northwest, it should slowly weaken. New Orleans will receive strong tropical storm force gusts for through mid-afternoon with tropical storm gusts continuing through the night. Baton Rouge will have strong tropical storm force winds from this afternoon through early morning Thursday. This will cause more massive power outages. POWER OUTAGES Nearing 500,000 people without power now in Gulf Coast region. I-10 CLOSED I-10 closed in both directions at LaPlace. Unsure why. HURRICANE HUNTERS The Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters flew 34 missions in Issac, making 95 center fixes and providing an invaluable service to the nation. Thanks!
