THIS MORNING: Still very pleasant, especially over East Alabama, where places like Anniston and Gadsden are in the upper 50s at daybreak. It is warmer to the west, where Memphis reports 78 degrees with big storms to the west over Arkansas.
The atmosphere will moisten up today, and we will need to keep an eye on the storms over Arkansas. Some of those could reach Northwest Alabama, but they are expected to slowly weaken and dissipate as they move into the more stable and drier air over Alabama. SPC maintains a “slight risk” of severe weather for areas just north and west of Alabama, but at this point the chance of organized severe weather here looks rather low.
Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high not too far from 90 degrees.
TONIGHT/TOMORROW: With an upper trough approaching from the northwest, we will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms. It won’t rain everywhere, but some neighborhoods could see a decent shower or storm along the way. For North/Central Alabama, seems like the main window for showers or storms will come from about 9:00 tonight through 12:00 noon tomorrow… tomorrow afternoon the best chance of showers and storms should shift down into South Alabama. Most likely we won’t get out of the 80s tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: These two days look relatively dry; with a partly to mostly sunny sky and a high in the 89-92 degree range.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Another increase in showers and thunderstorms is likely Friday and Saturday with another front approaching from the northwest. Then, drier air works into North Alabama Sunday. Temperatures remain below average for August… the GFS is printing a high of only 85 Saturday, and 87 on Sunday.
Monday of next week looks dry, followed by another increase in moisture by the middle of next week. And, out in the long range, still no sign of any excessive heat through the end of August. Pretty much no doubt now our hottest weather this summer was back in late June, and from the way it looks the temperature this summer, on an average basis, is going to wind up below average for much of the Southeast U.S.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Only a small risk of a shower on the Gulf Coast today with a good supply of sunshine; scattered showers and storms will be a little more numerous tomorrow and Wednesday, although on those days we still expect about 4-6 hours of sunshine. Pretty typical weather is expected Thursday and Friday; about 5 to 7 hours of sun each day with scattered storms. Highs will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 83 degrees.
TROPICS: TD 7 fizzled out Saturday, and the remnant disturbance is over the Caribbean with no sign of organization. Tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin this week.
