A Major Unfolding Severe Weather Threat

| July 26, 2012 @ 7:50 pm

Not for Alabama–at least not yet.

One of the longest lines of severe thunderstorms that I can remember is stretched out all across the Central and Eastern USA this evening. It stretches across 2/3rds of the country from West Texas northeastward to about Dallas, to Little Rock, across the Missouri Bootheel to Louisville, Pittsburgh, New York City and into Conn.

Lightning is intense all along the line. Just in the last few hours, there has been 256 high wind reports and two tornado reports. Most of the damaging wind reports (so far) have come out of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. A severe thunderstorm moved right across Times Square. NYC reported a wind gust of 49 mph. Literally dozens and dozens of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued and several Tornado Warnings.

While the individual thunderstorms are racing toward the northeast, the line is sinking southward. The line of thunderstorms is not far from Memphis.

Bottom line…we will need to watch closely late tonight about the possibility of some of those storms reaching North Alabama.
