GOOD OLE SUMMERTIME WEATHER: Look for the usual July mix of weather for Alabama today. Morning sunshine will push temperatures into the 90s by midday, and the air then becomes buoyant, and some of the rising air parcels will shape big cumulonimbus clouds that dump lots of rain on scattered spots during the afternoon and evening hours. These summer storms tend to form in rather random locations, and don’t move very much due to light winds aloft. The chance of your front yard seeing rain today is about one in three.

Yesterday on their day two convective outlook, SPC had much of Alabama in a “slight risk” of severe weather for today, but this morning they took that out, just leaving us in a 5 percent severe weather potential. Really doesn’t matter one way or another; our summer storms here are usually “pulse” storms; not really organized with severe weather potential for only a short time, consisting of hail and wet microbursts. No doubt there will be some strong storms around later today; we will keep an eye on them.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Not much change in the large scale pattern; expect partly sunny days with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms through Sunday. Highs stay generally in the 90s, with lows in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Signs of a pattern change. Most global computer models push the main heat dome to the western half of the nation, and it opens the door for lower heat levels across the Deep South, along with higher chances of rain. A weak front is expected to become nearly stationary just north of Alabama, which could enhance the coverage of showers and storms for a few days next week, which is great news for a state that generally speaking still needs rain. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with the usual risk of scattered showers and storms. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab early this morning was 84 degrees.
