It’s almost too hot for a Weather Xtreme Video!! Tuscaloosa set a new record high yesterday of 105. And Mobile was the coolest spot in the state with 96 degrees while Muscle Shoals came in at 107. With the ridge over us for today and Sunday I don’t see much change in the heat. The NWS in Birmingham has a heat advisory in effect through Sunday for all of Central Alabama and there is an excessive heat warning for the counties of Northwest Alabama.

The upper ridge together with surface high pressure along the Gulf Coast have kept humidity levels down somewhat over the last several days. However, it appears that moisture levels will be on the increase slowly over the next several days as dew points climb during the day into the upper 60s. The moisture increase plus a slight lowering of the thickness values could take a few degrees off the heat as we get into the upcoming work week, but heat indices could still remain at dangerous levels due to the increased humidity values.

With the moisture increase plus a weak short wave that comes our way on Tuesday and Wednesday, we are likely to see some daily shower development. Sunday I would expect isolated storms, though any storms that do form could produce damaging wind gusts. As we get into the work week, shower development seems a bit more likely but the areal coverage will still be limited so not many of us will get any rain. With lowered thicknesses as well as the increase in clouds, I would expect to see our high temperatures dip back at least into the mid and upper 90s for Tuesday through the end of the week.

Tropics are a bit active with three areas of disturbed weather, however, none of those appears likely to develop into a tropical storm during the next couple of days.

Severe weather potential is still well to our north. There was quite a big derecho event from Chicago to the Mid-Atlantic States yesterday with over 500 damaging wind reports. The atmosphere got worked over pretty well in that event, however, it’s possible they could see another one round today.

Long range model projections into week two really do not show any major changes as the big ridge seems to continue to ebb and flow across the southern tier of the US.
