Hottest So Far This Summer

HERE COME THE TRIPLE DIGITS: The nasty heat ridge that has been over the central part of the nation in recent days is drifting in our direction, and promises to bring the hottest weather so far this year to the Deep South.

Before we get into the heat parade, we should note this is another very comfortable morning across the state thanks to the very dry air; Vic Bell up in Black Creek (near Gadsden) reports a cool 55 degrees. Feels just like fall. But, that fall feeling will fade in a hurry.

HOW HOT: The high today will be pretty close to 100, and we project highs generally between 100 and 103 tomorrow through Sunday. Thankfully the dew points will remain fairly low, meaning the heat index won’t be much of a factor (the way it feels because of the combined effect of temperature and humidity). But still, it will clearly be like a blast furnace. We might hear of a spots up in far Northwest Alabama making a run at 105 around Muscle Shoals as they will be closest to the big upper high.

Birmingham’s hottest June temperature on record is 106 set on June 29, 1931. Doubtful it gets that hot, but it will be close.

And, of course the ridge means sinking air and no rain as our state remains very dusty. Today will be the 16th consecutive day without rain at the Birmingham Airport (where records are kept), and the rain deficiency there for the year is up to 5.49?. Anniston is even drier with a deficit of 6.78? for the year.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like we stay around 100 degrees Monday, but heat levels back down ever so slightly by Tuesday and Independence Day. And, with rising moisture levels we might see a few scattered showers or storms during the afternoon or evening hours, but nothing really widespread. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details and graphics.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Debby is no more… it is now a non-tropical low well east of the U.S. Deeper in the tropics, a small disturbance about halfway between the Leeward Islands and the coast of Africa has some disorganized convection, but it is not expected to get it’s act together.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Looks great through the weekend with sunny days and fair nights. Highs in the 87-90 degree range; ocean water temperatures in the low to mid 80s. Most of next week looks fine with only isolated showers or storms.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
