Unsettled Weather Again Today

Looks like our weather remains unsettled for this Mother’s Day Sunday. Central Alabama enjoyed rain free conditions through about sunset yesterday as the rain developed south and west of us. The bulk of that rain has moved east of us, however, the upper air pattern remains nearly unchanged, so showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue off and on through much of today. Clouds and rain should hold temperatures down in the mid 70s.
While we stay in a broad trough pattern, a short wave trough is moving out of the Central Rockies. That trough swings through West Texas on Monday and into the vicinity of the Mississippi River on Tuesday. This keeps us in an unsettled pattern with rain chances each day through Tuesday. Wednesday the trough axis swings through Central Alabama bringing us under a northerly flow with a reduction in humidity and an end to the unsettled pattern.
The trough doesn’t go far setting up a broad closed low over the Carolina coast, however, we stay west of that closed low, so it looks like the weather should be free of rain for the end of the week and into the weekend. The bad news is that temperatures will also warm up a good deal getting us back into the 80s for afternoon highs.
By a week from today we should still be under the ridging to our west with a trough along the East Coast, but there is an interesting pattern in the tropics with a pretty significant surface low just south of Cuba. That surface low is projected to move northeastward into the Bahamas by May 23rd. Now we all know this is voodoo country, but there is consistency in the model solution and I noted that the ECMWF also shows a large rain area over that portion of map on the 23rd. So an interesting feature that perhaps suggests we might be starting the 2012 hurricane season on an early note. By the end of the period around the 28th, we are back under a substantial ridge.
