Deja Vu Almost Over Again

A quick peek at the radar this morning brings back memories of the radar yesterday morning with the big cluster of storms over Kentucky and Tennessee. Only difference is that these are further south affecting the area where I originally thought we’d see thunderstorms yesterday. But today the capping inversion is weaker especially in terms of depth, so watch the video for a look at that sounding.

Several warnings in effect at this writing including a couple of severe thunderstorm and at least one flash flood warning. Thunderstorms were along a weak boundary and were moving toward the southeast. I expect to see additional scattered thunderstorms develop today thanks to the weak boundary at the surface together with a weakness in the upper air pattern. That weakness will move off somewhat on Monday, however, a small short wave over Illinois will swing by followed by a strong short wave on Tuesday and Wednesday. So all of these features will help to create several days of unsettled weather for the Southeast and Central Alabama.

As the second and bigger short wave passes Wednesday it should help to usher in a northwesterly flow pattern which will bring some much drier air into our region. With dew points expected to fall back into the 40s, we should see some very nice Spring days on Thursday and Friday with highs in the upper 70s. Those temperatures not quite back to where we ought to be in the first of May.

A small cut off upper low will move close on Friday and Saturday, but at this time it looks like it will have very little moisture to deal with. So Saturday we’ll see temperatures climb bit but we should remain dry. That disturbance moves closer on Sunday and will help to enhance chances for showers.

Rainfall amounts over the next 3 to 4 days will be in the 1 to 1 and a half inch range. Those that get some better rains across East Central Alabama today could see higher rainfall totals by the time the precipitation ends on Wednesday.

Looking out into voodoo country, we see another substantial trough around the 16th with a strong ridge returning by the 21st.

What a weekend for weather and lot of big outdoor events. It was my pleasure to provide weather support to the Schaeffer Crawfish Boil. I hope the folks at Talladega will get good support today, too, with the threats they are facing. Good decisions are made only if the decision makers have good information with which to make those decisions that affect safety and operations. I hope you have a great week. James Spann should be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video first thing Monday morning. Godspeed.
