Some Near Record Warmth

Once again Central Alabama finds itself in a very warm weather pattern, warm enough to be pushing our afternoon highs close to some record values. For today, the records across Central Alabama include 89 at Birmingham and 90 at Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Montgomery. For Monday, the record highs include 91 at Birmingham, 92 at Tuscaloosa and Anniston, and 94 at Montgomery. And to help us out, it appears that we are starting the day with a cloudless sky unlike yesterday, so the mercury should soar today with more hours of sun. If I were a betting man, I’d be inclined to bet against that record!! GFS MOS guidance is 87 for today and 90 for tomorrow.

Looks like the week ahead will remain summer-ish with some chances for scattered showers toward the end of the week. The overall upper air pattern remains dominated by an upper ridge which is acting much like a shield to keep the traveling weather systems to our north and west. The only hitch in the picture is a weak upper air disturbance over Florida that meanders into the Northeast Gulf of Mexico by Thursday. Weak features like this can defy model guidance, so we will have to keep a wary eye on the evolution of this feature. Based on current information, the shower risk is highest east and south of Central Alabama until Friday when we see our greatest threat for scattered showers. That weak feature becomes aligned west to east along the Gulf Coast on Saturday as it slowly drifts southward. This should mean a small chance for showers on Saturday. So it is looking like some warm weather for next weekend’s Schaeffer Crawfish Boil in downtown Birmingham.

SPC continues to focus attention of the severe weather risk to our north and west for Day 1 and Day 2 along the boundary draped from the Mid-Atlantic states across into the Central Plains. Day 3 the severe weather risk shifts a bit further west stretching from Kansas to Wisconsin.

As we enter well into May, there are no major changes to the overall weather pattern as we peek into voodoo country. The development of a much cooler pattern with a fairly deep trough over the eastern US is still on the books for around May 13 to 14.

I had a wonderful picnic out with my wife yesterday for lunch time. The clouds had cleared and we had a lovely breeze to eat our lunch. So a very quiet day for the Peters household. Yesterday was not the kind of day you will remember way out into the future like some high points in your memory such as April 27th, 2011, but that nice day spent with your mate of almost 43 years is just the way to spend a lovely, warm late April day.
