Arctic Air Invades Alabama Tonight

FRIGID AIR: Looks like the coldest air so far this season will blow into Alabama this weekend. Ahead of the push of Arctic air, we will maintain the chance of a little scattered light rain or sprinkles tonight. And, as the cold air rushes in tomorrow morning, a few snow flurries are possible, mainly along and north of I-59. While we don’t expect any accumulation in Alabama, to the north, some accumulation is possible across the eastern half of Tennessee, especially across higher terrain. A winter storm warning is in effect for the mountains of West Virginia.

HOW COLD? The new 12Z guidance suggests we will have a hard time getting out of the 30s tomorrow with a strong north wind of 15-25 mph, keeping the wind chill index near freezing all day despite the sky becoming mostly sunny.

Both the GFS and the NAM are printing a low of 19 degrees for Birmingham early Sunday; we figure the actual range will be from near 14 in the coldest valleys, to near 24 on the ridge tops. The day Sunday will be sunny but cold with a high in the low 40s.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change in the overall ideas thrown out here in recent days. We will have a chance of showers Monday night and Tuesday, and then a chance of thunderstorms Thursday. The week will feature a warm-up, and we will be well up in the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday. See the Weather Xtreme video for the latest graphics and details.
