New Tornado Watch

| January 21, 2012 @ 5:08 am

A new tornado watch has been issued until noon for Central Alabama.

Central Alabama Counties include: Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, Winston, Autauga, Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lee, Macon, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa and Tuscaloosa.

North Alabama Counties include: Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Cullman, DeKalb, Jackson and Marshall.

Our line of intense storms continues pushing southeastward across Northwest Alabama this morning. It is just pulling into Marion County at this hour. An independent storm is just north of Hamilton.

Some of the most intense activity now is coming out of Fulton County, Mississippi, headed toward Franklin and northwestern Marion Counties in Alabama. You could see damaging winds of 50-60 mph with this activity.

The main threat is for damaging winds and hail with storms in the line as well as any that form ahead of it. There is also enough shear for us to think there could be an isolated spin-up tornado or two over the western part of Central Alabama as well. They won’t be the large, destructive tornadoes like April 27th, but if they hit your house or mobile home, the impact can be significant. So please pay attention to warnings this morning and be in your safe place before the storms arrive.

The further southeast the line pushes later this morning, the more unstable the air will become and the severe weather threat will increase. But luckily, with the low pulling away, the small tornado threat may actually decrease. We hope so at least.

Well southeast of the main line right now, the showers over northern Shelby County did grow into storms. Lightning is being observed over St. Clair and Calhoun Counties now, especially around Munford.

Quite a difference in temperatures across our cold front that is draped across southern Tennessee and northern Mississippi this morning. It is 41F at Memphis and 64F just down the road in Tupelo.
