Tornado Watch Issued for Northwest Alabama for Overnight Hours

| January 20, 2012 @ 10:44 pm

Evening model data indicates a better chance of severe storms through the morning hours for West central Alabama. Instability values will be increasing overnight as colder air aloft overspread the warm, most airmass over the state. Wind shear values will support organized thunderstorms and low level shear may be sufficient for tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch for northern Mississippi, southern Tennessee and Northwest Alabama until 5 a.m.

In Alabama, it includes the following counties:

Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, Winston. It is in effect until 5:00 AM CST.

We will monitor the situation carefully through the overnight hours.

The severe threat may well shift down into Central Alabama during the morning hours and shift southeast of I-59 during the afternoon. Damaging winds and hail will be the main threats but isolated tornadoes are possible as well.
