MOIST AIR RETURNS TONIGHT: After a beautiful day with a big warm-up (Tuscaloosa has reached 60 degrees at 2:00), clouds will return to Alabama late tonight as moist air moves in from the south. Of course, that means tonight won’t be as cold as last night with temperatures well above freezing.
TOMORROW: The warm-up continues. We rise into the mid 60s tomorrow; the sky will be cloudy and we will maintain the chance of scattered showers during the day. The NAM is much more aggressive than the GFS with rain tomorrow, but one way or another a few passing showers are likely.
THE WEEKEND: A short wave will enhance the dynamic lift across the state Saturday, with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. The 12Z model data set continues to show a pretty marginal severe weather situation, with very low CAPE and moderate shear values. Forecast hodographs really don’t look favorable for storm rotation, but the stronger storms could produce gusty winds and maybe a little hail. SPC has no formal severe weather risk for Alabama on Saturday, but the low end 5 percent probabilities. The rain on Saturday won’t be continuous, and the sun might even pop out briefly, But, it could rain at any time.
Sunday could very well be a day with near record warmth. The GFS is printing 75 degrees for Birmingham Sunday; the sky will be generally cloudy, and we will need to maintain a chance of scattered showers with low level moisture pooled across the region.
Then, a cold front will bring an organized round of showers and storms late Sunday night into Monday morning. Looks like the main window for this activity will come from about 12 midnight Sunday night through 12:00 noon Monday. While strong storms are possible along the front, severe weather for now looks unlikely.
NEXT WEEK: Showers and storms will move out of Alabama during the day Monday, and Tuesday looks mostly sunny and dry with a high in the 60s. Later in the week, the ECMWF is now actually leaning toward the GFS, showing a cut-off upper low over Mexico, with the northern branch well north of Alabama. Showers look possible Thursday and Friday, but the idea of severe weather, at least for now, is off the table. Take some time to watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.
