Coldest Weather in 11 Months

It is a chilly morning across Central Alabama with temperature readings running at or just above the freezing mark. But with good cold air advection underway, it looks like tomorrow morning will be the coldest with lows expected to fall back to near 20 degrees. If this materializes, it will be the coldest weather in almost 11 months since February 10-12, 2011.

The trough moves off into the Atlantic on Tuesday and Wednesday reducing the amplitude of the flow across the eastern half of the country. As this happens, our temperatures will slowly moderate through the upcoming week following a chilly day today and another one on Tuesday. But by Friday we could see highs pushing pretty close to the 60-degree mark.

We should stay dry all week thanks to the cold dry air in place. Dew points this morning were near the 20-degree mark, so the air is very dry. This leads to fire weather dangers for outdoor burning. Also there is a wind advisory for this afternoon with northwest wind at 10 to 20 mph with some higher gusts. So be careful if you have any outdoor activities that involve controlled burns.

By Saturday and Sunday, a short wave trough moves out of the Rockies and across the Southeast US. This will bring us the next chance for rain. At the moment, this does not appear to be a significant rain event for us. And with another fairly deep trough – though not as deep as the one we are currently experiencing – we see some more cold weather as we head into the start of the second week of January and 2012.

The pattern remains fairly active into voodoo country with a possible rain event around the 12th and 13th and a cool down again around the 17th.
