Flash Flooding Threat – April 6, 2025

FLASH FLOODING THREAT CONTINUES ACROSS THE GULF COAST

Heavy rain and flash flooding are ongoing this evening across coastal Mississippi, southern Alabama,
and the western Florida Panhandle as bands of training thunderstorms continue to push inland. A particularly
intense corridor of storms has developed in the vicinity of Mobile, Alabama, where extremely high
rainfall rates have been observed. The Downtown Mobile (KBFM) ASOS reported an astounding
3.17 inches in just one hour, with radar indicating persistent convection continuing over the metro
area and surrounding communities.

These storms are being fueled by a strong low-level jet transporting rich Gulf moisture into the region,
combined with favorable upper-level support and instability that remains in place despite the onset of evening.
With rainfall rates as high as 2 to 4 inches per hour, and a slow-moving frontal boundary still to the
west, additional rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are likely through the late evening hours, with isolated
heavier amounts possible. The result will be a continuation—and possibly worsening—of significant, life-threatening
flash flooding, especially in urbanized areas and poor-drainage zones.

Forecast guidance, including the HRRR and high-res ensemble models, supports the potential for continued
training of storms into southern Alabama, including Baldwin and Mobile counties, and into the western Florida
Panhandle. Residents in the path of these storms should remain extremely alert to rapidly changing conditions,
avoid flooded roads, and be prepared to take immediate action if a flash flood warning is issued.
