| February 18, 2025 @ 1:00 pm

Cold weather advisories been issued by the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and Huntsville from midnight Wednesday night to noon Thursday, highlighting the potential for dangerously cold conditions across central and northern Alabama, as well as southern middle Tennessee.

They will probably be needed Thursday night as well.

According to NWS Birmingham, wind chills in north-central Alabama could drop as low as 5°F, while areas farther south could see wind chills near 15°F. The advisory covers locations such as Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Walker, Blount, Etowah, Calhoun, Jefferson, Shelby, Montgomery, and Auburn. This cold blast is expected from midnight Wednesday night through noon Thursday.

Meanwhile, NWS Huntsville warns of even more frigid conditions across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee, where wind chills may plummet to zero degrees. Areas under this advisory include Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin (AL), Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb, Cullman, and Tennessee counties such as Moore, Lincoln, and Franklin. This advisory is also in effect from midnight Wednesday night through noon Thursday.

And areas that have snow cover could get EVEN colder Wednesday and Thursday nights.

These conditions increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Additionally, subfreezing temperatures may cause pipes to freeze or burst.

Residents are urged to dress warmly in layers, including hats and gloves, and to ensure that pets have warm, dry shelter. Check on elderly neighbors and family members, and take steps to protect exposed pipes. Portable heaters should be used safely, and grills or generators should never be used indoors.
