Light Snow Across North and North Central Alabama
Snow showers continue to fall across North and North Central Alabama this morning, including portions of the Tennessee Valley. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has been monitoring bands of light snow that have developed across the region, with radar confirming scattered activity from northwest Alabama eastward. Residents have shared photos and videos of snowflakes reaching the ground, making for a scenic start to the day. While snowfall amounts will remain light, generally less than an inch, motorists should be aware of a few slick spots forming on bridges, overpasses, and other elevated surfaces.
Temperatures have dropped into the upper 20s to low 30s across much of the region, and with a cold wind blowing at 10 to 20 mph, wind chills are dipping into the upper teens. Even as the snow showers taper off by midday, cold air will remain firmly in place, keeping highs today in the mid to upper 30s for most locations. The breezy conditions will persist throughout the day, contributing to a blustery feel and reinforcing the need for caution on the roads.
In Huntsville and the surrounding Tennessee Valley, light snow has been falling steadily through the morning. The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 7 PM CST for the area, where up to an inch of snow may accumulate in isolated spots, particularly in northwest Alabama and along the I-65 corridor. Refreezing of earlier rainfall and melted snow could lead to additional slick spots as temperatures hover below freezing through much of the afternoon. Gusty winds of up to 30 mph will keep wind chills in the teens and low 20s, making it feel even colder than it already is.
Meanwhile, North Central Alabama is also experiencing periods of light snow and flurries. While accumulations are expected to remain minor, the wintry scene has generated significant public interest, with many sharing images of snow-covered yards and rooftops. The National Weather Service anticipates travel impacts to be limited, but elevated surfaces may still see some slick spots due to subfreezing temperatures and lingering moisture.
Looking ahead, the cold weather will continue into Tuesday, with lows tonight dipping into the low to mid 20s. Wind chills in the teens will make for a bitterly cold start to the day. Despite some clearing skies, temperatures will struggle to climb, with highs on Tuesday only reaching the upper 30s to low 40s. Conditions will remain dry, but cold winds from the north will keep wind chills low throughout the day.
Later in the week, attention turns to a developing coastal low expected to move across the Gulf Coast on Thursday night into Friday. This system may bring another round of winter weather to parts of Central Alabama, with the potential for snow, freezing rain, and sleet. While details remain uncertain, some areas could see accumulating wintry precipitation. Stay tuned for updates as the forecast becomes clearer over the next few days.
