Drought Monitor Update: Little To No Improvement This Past Week

| January 2, 2025 @ 12:01 pm

Despite the heavy rain and thunderstorms the state dealt with last weekend, there was very little improvements in the ongoing drought. A moderate to severe drought continues across portions of Central and northern Alabama, with even an area of extreme drought over northern Limestone county. Compared to last week, the percentage of the state in a moderate drought only dropped by about 1%.

Over the next week, the WPC expects a decent amount of rain for the northern half of the state, with 0.75-1.25″ of rain anticipated. Across the southern half of the state, less than 1″ is expected over the next week. This will help to slowly chip away at the drought, but unfortunately, it is not a drought buster.
