Radar Check at 11:15: Showers Around, Friday Update, Saturday Severe Weather Outlook

| December 26, 2024 @ 11:32 am

A pretty decent band of showers is lifting northward across the northeastern half of Alabama this morning.

Moderate rainfall is approaching the Birmingham Metro area at this time. Amounts will be light, less than 0.05 inches.

No thunder involved.

Temperatures are climbing through the 50s, except where it has been raining, where readings are still in the 40s.

It now appears that a band of showers and storms will form across eastern Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas this afternoon and push eastward overnight. This activity will weaken as it approaches our state Friday morning, but we will deal with a west to east moving band of rain and some embedded thunder starting in western sections around 5-7 a.m., in the I-65 Corridor including Birmingham as early as 8, with off and on showers through early afternoon. There could be some lightning in the activity during the morning, but it looks like it will diminish as the system moves eastward.

There may be a few showers for tailgating activities for the Birmingham Bowl, but it is mostly under City Walk where rain isn’t an issue.

No severe weather is expected during the day on Friday.

But strong to severe storms are likely on Saturday evening as a surface low moves out of Arkansas into southeastern Missouri. There will be low levels of instability, but very high low level helicity and this can lead to spin up tornadoes. So we want you to be weather aware on Saturday, especially Saturday by late afternoon into the early evening as this situation unfolds.

Here is the SPC day three outlook for Saturday:

I would not be surprised to see the slight risk (level 2 of 5) expanded into Alabama further on subsequent outlooks.

I will have the afternoon video by 3.
