| December 26, 2024 @ 11:11 am

CLOUDY, GRAY DAYS: Clouds have returned to the Alabama sky and we are seeing some areas of light rain across the state. Temperatures today are ranging from the upper 40s to upper 50s this afternoon.

Tonight, will be cloudy with lows in the 40s, and we could see some light rain across western portions of the state. Tomorrow, rain will increase in coverage across the state and some rumbles of thunder are possible; expect highs in the low 60s.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 26th, the average high for Birmingham is 55° and the average low is 37°. The record high is 76° set in 2021, while the record low is 5° set in 1983. We average 0.16” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 2.04” set in 1973.

ACROSS THE USA: A series of Pacific storm systems will continue to impact the Northwest U.S. into this coming weekend with periods of gusty winds, high surf, low elevation rain, and heavy mountain snow. Severe thunderstorms will be possible on Thursday across central/east Texas into western Louisiana and possibly the ArkLaTex and southeast Oklahoma.

WET WEEKEND WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms Saturday for a small part of far West Alabama, most of the rest of the state is in a “marginal risk” (level 1/5).

While rain is possible at anytime Saturday, the chance of stronger storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours. A few storms could produce strong, gusty winds and hail. A brief, isolated tornado can’t be totally ruled out. However, the morning rain could limit the chance of severe storms later in the day. The rain will end Sunday morning as drier air moves into the state….highs over the weekend will be in the mid to upper 60s.

GOODBYE 2024, HELLO 2025: Monday will be dry, but some showers are expected Tuesday. Highs these two days will be in the low to mid 60s. Much colder air arrives as the New Year started, and highs fall into the 40s by Thursday and Friday over the northern half of the state, with sub-freezing lows.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 117.0F at Birdsville Airport, Australia. The lowest observation was -57.8F at Summit, Greenland.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 86F at Bayview, TX. The lowest observation was -13F at Clayton Lake and Rangeley, ME.
