Midday Nowcast: Tons of Sunshine for Christmas Eve; Some Showers Expected Late Christmas Day
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE: Plenty of sunshine across Alabama today and highs are climbing into the upper 50s and lower 60s as the warming trend continues. No problem for Santa tonight as he travels across Alabama and the Deep South; it will be a clear and cold night with mid 30s for most locations.
CHRISTMAS DAY: Most of tomorrow looks dry, but we bring the chance of some rain tomorrow night. Christmas Day will start off sunny, but clouds will increase through the day, especially during the afternoon and evening hours ahead of the rain. Temperatures will again be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 24th, the average high for Birmingham is 55° and the average low is 37°. The record high is 77° set in 1964, while the record low is 4° set in 1989. We average 0.17” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 2.43” set in 1926.
USA BRIEF: A series of Pacific storm systems will cross the Northwest U.S. this week bringing gusty winds, high surf, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow. A storm system will track through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today with a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain making for hazardous travel.
REST OF 2024: Thursday should remain mainly dry, but will be mostly cloudy. On Friday, we expect a few showers, and both days will feature highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s. For the weekend, the chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase as moisture levels rise. Highs will be in the 60s statewide Saturday and Sunday, and the relatively mild weather will continue into the first half of next week as we round out 2024. Much colder weather looks to arrive as we get into the first couple of weeks of 2025.
