Sunday Weather Briefing Video: A Slow Warming Trend, Showers for Christmas
Today will be the first full day of meteorological winter, and it will feel like it across North and Central Alabama as a northwesterly flow aloft and cold high pressure remains in control of our weather.
FOR YOUR SUNDAY
The average high for Birmingham for December 22nd is 56F, the average low 37F. We are starting off about 10-12 degrees below that average low this morning, with readings in the lower and middle middles across the entire area. Despite total sunshine, temperatures today won’t respond very much. Highs by afternoon will range between 47-53F generally. Lows tonight will be a bit warmer than those of last night, running between 28-31F.
MONDAY DRY
We start the short work week off with a slow warming trend continuing on the back of a light southeasterly wind flow around high pressure to our east. We will be tracking a disturbance to our west, coming out of the Rockies and into the Central Plains. Here, we will continue with mostly sunny conditions through the day, with increasing clouds by evening. Afternoon readings will be in the 50s. Lows Monday night will manage to drop into the upper 20s to middle 30s.
CHRISTMAS EVE
Clouds will continue to be on the increase on Tuesday as that disturbance approaches the Mississippi River by Tuesday night. Highs will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Rain will be breaking out to our west and approaching the state by evening. Santa may dodge a few raindrops as he makes his deliveries Tuesday night. No thunder will be involved.
CHRISTMAS DAY
The rain will be moving east and diminishing during the day Christmas Day. Skies will remain mostly cloudy, and highs will be mild, between 54-63F.
THURSDAY
An upper ridge will build over Alabama on Thursday, but high moisture levels will keep things mostly cloudy. Temperatures will continue to be mild, starting off in the 40s and rising into the upper 50s to lower 60s as a mild southeasterly flow continues.
BIRMINGHAM BOWL WEATHER
What might end up being one of the most attended Birmingham Bowls in history will not be weather challenged for sure. There should be increasing sunshine during the day, with temperatures warming into the middle 60s by gametime. Highs across North and central Alabama will be between 59-68F.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Another system will approach Alabama over the weekend, bringing additional rain chances. Mostly of Saturday will be dry, but showers will begin to break out by late afternoon, with rain becoming more widespread overnight. The front won’t drag through until Sunday evening, and there will be some instability by Sunday afternoon, so thunder will probably be involved, but severe weather doesn’t look like an issue.
VOODOOLAND
New Years week looks wet early and turning sharply colder. No snow involved though, snow fans. Sorry.
WEATHER HISTORY
On this date in 1989: Snow in Tampa and Daytona Beach? Yes, it really happened on this date as Florida experienced its most widespread snowstorm in history. Two inches fell in Savannah, one of only three times that snowfall in the city required a ruler for measurement. Charleston SC picked up 3.9 inches of the white stuff.
