Drought Monitor: Additional Slight Improvements to Report!

| December 19, 2024 @ 4:31 pm

Recent rains have helped the drought conditions at least a wee bit across the state! Still a long way to go and sadly rain chances over the next week not the greatest.

Per the U.S. Drought Monitor that was released today, 6.59% of the state is under no drought category.  That is up from 1.39%. There is a small area of NW Alabama in this and then into southern parts of the state. There is no area reported in the Exceptional Drought (D4) and only a very small area in an Extreme Drought (D3).  That is still near the TN line into parts of Limestone and Madison Counties.

Even though we have had some improvement, over 93% of the state is under some sort of drought category.  That is is estimated population of over 1.4 million people. As we are heading toward the weekend and then our Christmas week, the 7-day precipitation outlooks calls for only small totals of a quarter of an inch or less.  This would come in with a system expected to arrive late Christmas Day into Thursday.
