Midday Nowcast: Severe Clear with Cold Temperatures

SUNNY AND COLD: Tons of sunshine in the cobalt blue sky across Alabama today, but despite the sunshine temperatures are only in the 40s, which are 10-15 degrees below average for this time of year. Tonight will be another clear and cold one with a widespread freeze as temperature settle into the 20s by early tomorrow morning.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 6th, the average high for Birmingham is 59° and the average low is 39°. The record high is 78° set in 1998, while the record low is 14° set in 1937. We average 0.15” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 3.62” set in 1908.

ACROSS THE USA: Lake effect snow will continue into the weekend as two more quick moving systems will bring widespread snow to the Upper Great Lakes. High winds are expected across portions of Montana through the weekend. Below normal temperatures will remain in place across much of the southern and eastern U.S., while the western U.S. will experience above normal temperatures.

FOOTBALL WEATHER:The Alabama high school state football championship games continue to be played at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
Three games close out the event today (4A at 11am, 2A at 3pm, and 6A at 7pm). The sky will be clear; temperatures will be in the low to mid 40s for the day games, and once again 30s are expected for most of the night game.

Tonight, the C-USA Championship game will be played at Jacksonville; Jax State will host Western Kentucky (6:00p CT kickoff at Amfirst Stadium). The sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 30s during the game.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Tomorrow will be sunny and dry with a high in the 50s, then clouds return Sunday, and rain spreads into Alabama from the south and west by later afternoon and will continue to overspread the state Sunday night. Highs Sunday will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s.

WET START TO WEEK: We are expecting periods of rain across Alabama Monday and Tuesday; a thunderstorm will be possible but for now we see no risk of severe storms. This will likely be a beneficial rain event with potential for 2-4 inches with isolated higher amounts. The latter half of next week will be dry and cold with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 111.2F at Paraburdoo Aero, Australia. The lowest observation was -55.7F at Dome A, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 86F at Palm Springs, CA. The lowest observation was -18F at Peter Sinks, UT.
