Midday Nowcast: Another Surge of Very Cold Air Settling into Alabama for Tonight
TURNING COLDER: Another surge of colder air is flowing into the state today and we are seeing highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s with more sun than clouds across the northern half of the state. To the south, clouds remain and there are some areas of light rain. Tonight lows fall into the lows 20s with upper teens across North Alabama. Tomorrow will be sunny and cold with highs likely holding in the low 40s all day.

ACROSS THE USA: A powerful Arctic cold front will sweep across the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast this morning. Snow squalls along this front will be accompanied by intense bursts of heavy snowfall and gusty winds, producing dangerous travel conditions due to whiteouts and icy roads. Wind gusts up to 80 mph will spread into the Central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: The Alabama high school state football championship games are being played this year at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
There are three games today (3A at 11am, 1A at 3pm, and 5A at 7pm). The sky will be partly sunny for the day games with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. For the game tomorrow night, the sky will be clear with low 40s at kickoff, falling quickly into the 30s.
Three games close out the event on tomorrow (4A at 11am, 2A at 3pm, and 6A at 7pm). The sky will be clear; temperatures will be in the low to mid 40s for the day games, and once again 30s are expected for most of the night game.
Tomorrow night, the C-USA Championship game will be played at Jacksonville; Jax State will host Western Kentucky (6:00p CT kickoff at Amfirst Stadium). The sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 30s during the game.
DRY WEEKEND, THEN RAIN RETURNS: Saturday will be sunny and dry with a high in the 50s, then clouds return Sunday, and rain spreads into Alabama late Sunday and Sunday night, lasting into early next week. We are expecting periods of rain across Alabama and the Deep South Monday and Tuesday; a thunderstorm will be possible but for now we see no risk of severe storms. This will likely be a beneficial rain event with potential for 2-3 inches, with isolated higher amounts. The latter half of next week will be dry and cold with highs in the 50s and lows in the 20s.
