Midday Nowcast: Increasing Clouds this Afternoon with Some Light Rain Overnight
A bit warmer today with highs climbing into the 50s, but clouds will be increasing from the west today and some rain is expected tonight and rainfall amounts will les than one-half inch. Overnight lows will hold in the 40s, so we are not expecting any frozen precipitation. Any lingering showers will come to an end early tomorrow morning.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 4th, the average high for Birmingham is 59° and the average low is 39°. The record high is 78° set in 1998, while the record low is 20° set in 1989. We average 0.15” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 1.93” set in 1912.
ACROSS THE USA: A strengthening clipper storm will shift across southeastern Canada Wednesday and Thursday with a arctic cold front crossing the Great Lakes and Northeast which will produce intense bursts of snow and gusty winds. Localized short-duration blizzard conditions will be possible with several feet of additional lake effect snow in the Great Lakes. Dry and warm conditions are expected in the West.
REST OF WEEK: Another surge of colder air flows into the state tomorrow and we are forecasting highs in the 40s. Tomorrow night lows fall into the 20s with upper teens across North Alabama, and then Friday will be sunny and cold with highs likely holding in the 40s all day.
FOOTBALL WEATHER:The Alabama high school state football championship games will be played this year at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
For the 7A game tonight (Thompson vs Central Phenix City), the sky will be cloudy; just a small chance of some light rain during the second half. Temperatures will be in the 40s.
There are three games tomorrow (3A at 11am, 1A at 3pm, and 5A at 7pm). The sky will be partly sunny for the day games with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. For the game tomorrow night, the sky will be clear with low 40s at kickoff, falling quickly into the 30s.
Three games close out the event on Friday (4A at 11am, 2A at 3pm, and 6A at 7pm). The sky will be clear; temperatures will be in the low to mid 40s for the day games, and once again 30s are expected for most of the night game.
Friday night the C-USA Championship game will be played at Jacksonville; Jax State will host Western Kentucky (6:00p CT kickoff at Amfirst Stadium). The sky will be clear with temperatures falling through the 30s during the game.
TURNING WET LATE THIS WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry with a high in the 50s, then clouds return Sunday and rain becomes likely Sunday night, lasting into early next week. We are expecting periods of rain across Alabama and the Deep South Monday and Tuesday; a thunderstorm will be possible but for now we see no risk of severe storms.
This will likely be a beneficial rain event with potential for 2-3 inches. The latter half of next week will be dry and cool with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. No sign of any severe thunderstorm issues for Alabama through mid-December.
