Midday Nowcast: Cold with Sunshine in Full Supply; Turning Wet this Weekend
SUNNY AND COLD: Tons of sunshine in the cobalt blue Alabama sky today, but despite all the sunshine, it remains a cold day with afternoon temperatures around fifteen degrees below average for this time of year; highs today are only in the mid-40s. Tonight, will be a very cold night with low and mid 20s expected, and colder spots across North Alabama are likely to see teens.
BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For December 3rd, the average high for Birmingham is 60° and the average low is 40°. The record high is 76° set in 1982, while the record low is 13° set in 1929. We average 0.15” of precipitation on this date, and the record value is 4.03” set in 1983.
SOME MIDWEEK SHOWERS: Clouds increase tomorrow and some rain is expected tomorrow night and into Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts will be less than one-half inch. Overnight lows will hold in the 40s, so we are not expecting any frozen precipitation. Highs Wednesday will be in the 50s, but another surge of colder air flow into the state Thursday and we are forecasting highs in the 40s. Thursday night lows fall into the 20s, and then Friday will be sunny and cold with highs likely holding in the 40s all day.
TURNING WET THIS WEEKEND: Saturday will be dry with a high in the 50s, then clouds return Sunday, and rain becomes likely Sunday night, lasting into early next week. We are expecting periods of rain across Alabama and the Deep South Monday and Tuesday; a thunderstorm will be possible but for now we see no risk of severe storms. This will likely be a beneficial rain event with potential for 1-2 inches, some spots could see more.
The latter half of next week will be dry and cool with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. No sign of any severe thunderstorm issues for Alabama through mid-December.
