Winter Weather Awareness Week- Power Outage Safety, and Don’t Forget the Pets!
During winter storms, power outages can be common, especially with ice storms. Its important to remember these safety tips during power outages to ensure you stay safe until power is restored. First, be careful with how you heat your house. Candles and space heaters can be a fire hazard, so its best to just bundle up, keep your doors closed, and put towels or blankets in any cracks that lead to the outdoors. Generators, when used properly, are a great thing to keep electricity to your home during an outage. But they can be a safety hazard if used improperly. Always use generators OUTDOORS, and never in your home or garage. Keep them at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and garages to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. And finally, remember to check on your neighbors. Make sure they are doing ok, and offer assistance if needed.
We cant forget our pets during winter weather! Pets are family, and need to be kept warm and dry during winter weather conditions, as they can be more sensitive to the cold than humans are. Make sure to also provide ample food and water, as dehydration can be more dangerous in cold weather. Never leave pets outside during the winter. And when you take them for walks, make sure they are bundled up and limit your time with them spent outdoors. When you bring them in, be sure to clean off their paws in case any salt used to melt snow is on them.
